Rain gutters run along the base of a roof and do more than keep downpours from soaking people coming in and out the structure.

Gutters help to channel water out and away from the structure’s foundation which can prevent flooded basements and damaged siding. They also help to prevent erosion. 

Some folks even collect gutter “runoff” in rain barrels in effort to conserve water. Runoff water can be used used for flushing toilets or watering the garden.
